Statue of the Reporter in Thebes Sebekemsaf

Middle Kingdom

Not on view

This object is not part of The Met collection. It was in the Museum for a special exhibition and has been returned to the lender.

This statue of a weighty official—whose position was in a sense equivalent to a present-day government spokesperson—gives some indication of the power wielded by such administrators in the stressful times of the later Thirteenth Dynasty. The sculptor has placed a wise man’s bald head on broad shoulders and a bulky body covered by a bell-shaped kilt. Especially emphasized are the muscular, overlong arms and huge hands that reach down almost to the level of the knees.
